The letters in volume 2 of Alfred Escher's correspondence cover Escher's life between the ages of 13 and 25, following him from his parent's house, to private tuition, high school and university. They provide a fascinating insight into Escher's time as a youth and student, as well as his development into a politically engaged doctor of law. They also reveal much about the life of his family, his relations with other people and his circle of friends. His Swiss and German correspondents include fellow pupils and students, private tutors and university professors. The range of subjects covered is very wide, taking in his travels in Switzerland and abroad, student life, academic enquiries, discussions of political events and first experiences of civic life.
